Military Markers A military marker was not put on a grave unless it was requested. These requests may have information that would help a genealogist. You can write for a copy of the original request by sending information on your veteran and your relationship to: Central Office of Monument
Services Clues to Maiden Names In the lower left-hand corner of most deeds, you will find the signatures of two to four witnesses. The first one is usually from the husband's side. The next one is usually from the wife's side. This was to protect her one-half dowry-right under the law. Nothing you will ever use will give greater clues to maiden names than witnesses on old deeds. Deeds Deeds located in the recorder's office are indexed. The grantee records may help establish the origin of your ancestor. The grantor records list the wife's name and may give clues about the disposal of property if the ancestor bypassed an estate settlement.
