State President's Letter

Dear Fellow C.A.R.ians,

Hello! I am Chrissy Herreid and am extremely proud and eager to start off the year as your Florida State President!. The state program this year is “S.O.S. Save our Springs.” I’ll be explaining the project and the purpose later on in the message. National Convention in April was lovely and I had a great time, especially at Mt. Vernon, where I was installed as your State President. Even though it was a little chilly, cold weather never stopped me!

After National Convention, my first official duty was to bring greetings to the Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution at their Spring Board of Management Meeting on May 8, 2010. This was held at the Ramada Gateway Hotel in Kissimmee, Florida. Sr. State President Ms. Mimi Leroy-Marler was also in attendance. I was asked to help pick tickets for the Basket voices and I picked my own ticket first! Thank you very much to the SAR gentlemen who purchased 72 state project pins, sight unseen! (Thanks also to Mr. and Mrs. Brock for their help with this.) More recently I visited a Blue Springs Society meeting along with Ms. Leroy-Marler. We got to go on a boat tour of Merritt’s Mill Pond and nearby Spring Caves. We learned a lot of new, interesting facts about springs and had a fantastic time! They made hot dogs and served cookies. A great time was had by all. Thanks to the Blue Springs Society members and seniors for inviting us.

Ms. Leroy-Marler and I have been working hard on our state program “S.O.S.—Save Our Springs!” This year members and seniors will learn about and enjoy our Florida springs, which are unique in the world! We will be studying the origin of springs and how to make sure they last so our children and grandchildren can see them. Our state project is to raise money for interpretive signs for the “Florida Butterfly Garden” at Florida’s newest State Park, Weeki Wachee Springs. The signs will help inspire and inform the public about use of native landscape plants that that don’t need a lot of pesticides or fertilizers to grow. This will help protect our springs and rivers for the next generation. Please be sure to buy a pin to support this project!

Don’t forget that regional meetings are coming up! Southeastern Regional is July 16th and 17th in Wilmington, NC. It would be great to see a big turnout from Florida there. Look out for information about your area’s state packet meeting, which will be held some time in August. Fun times will be had by all and I strongly recommend you go if possible! And don’t miss the state seminar Labor Day Weekend at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. This summer sure will be a busy one!
